Studding Season

Last week brought a January thaw to Mpls, followed by some rain Thursday and Friday... not good for winter fat biking, but with low temps in the forecast it should soon be ideal for riding studs.

This weekend I finished giving my rear 45Nrth Arcwelders a bit more bite...

The larger outer studs are #8 1/4" pan head, 410 stainless steel thread-cutting screws.  Not only are they longer and thicker than the stock studs, they are also MUCH cheaper.  I'll be experimenting with a couple different sizes of 1/4" screws to see what works best.  The #8 heads are a bit of a pain to get into the stud pocket, so I'm going to try a #6 on the front tire.  It'll be interesting to see how long they last and how well they stay in the tire.  I'm hoping to get out for a test ride soon.

I'm also studding a pair of Tioga DH tires, and these will definitely have more bite...

I'm trying a different studding process than I've used in the past.  This will be quick and dirty compared to my previous studding process.  I won't be doing any pre-drilling of the tire and I'll forego the nuts on the outside of the tire.  Just like before, I'll protect the tube from the screw heads with a bit of silicone.  The screws shown are a #8 1/2" 410 stainless steel self-drilling screw, but I think I'll end up using a 3/8" version instead.

One other project from this week was a rack deck for the Surly's custom rack.  The simple aluminum sheet will help keep crud off the bottom of my rack trunk (and me when the trunk isn't on there) and allow me to bungee things to the rack more effectively.

The Surly 1xWonder will soon be in great form for winter riding with bar mitts and two different options for studded tires.

Go ride a bike...

Nice job. I hope the sheetmetal screws work out. I did exactly the same thing, but those screws were about 1/16" too long, so I switched to short wood screws. Still having limited success with double-tubing my tires (have had one flat, but it didn't line up with a screw).
Keep us posted on how these turn out and which method keeps you out on the trails most reliably!
